Family film fest starting in Apex, NC

A News&Observer article by Matt Ehlers about the family-friendly Peak City Film festival kicking off this November in Apex, NC.

(EXCERPT) This town might not seem like a natural location for a film festival, but its first one this fall will be aimed at Apex’s dominant demographic.

The Peak City Film Festival is scheduled for Nov. 20 through Nov. 22, with entries expected from around the country, said John M. Demers, one of the festival’s founders.

“It will be a nice, eclectic mix,” he said. “I wanted content that I could watch with my kids and not be embarrassed.”

Demers, an actor and producer who lives in New Hill, runs Studio in the Woods, which produces corporate videos and develops feature films and television concepts. He has two children who are 11 and 8 and thinks a festival organized for families can succeed in a small town filled with them.

“I don’t see a slasher festival working in Apex,” he said.

The festival will focus on short films, and Demers hopes 50 to 60 movies will be screened. Emphasis will be placed not on kiddie films but on movies that three generations could watch together. Some entries will come from family film fests in other parts of the country, other entries from local filmmakers. Demers said a group of Triangle teenagers has already expressed interest in entering.
